On this day 9 June 1572 Jeanne d'Albret died.

Jeanne d'Albret also known as Jeanne III or Joan III, was the queen regnant of Navarre from 1555 to 1572. She married Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendôme, and was the mother of Henry of Bourbon, who became King of Navarre as well as of France as the first Bourbon king. She was the Duchess of Vendôme by marriage.

She was the acknowledged spiritual and political leader of the French Huguenot movement.

9th June is also the feast day of St Columba, a 6th century Irish missionary who founded a monastery on the Scottish island of Iona. it is said to be extra lucky if it falls on a Thursday, which it has! he is credited with numerous miracles, including driving away a monster that lurked in Loch Ness by making the sign of the cross, and securing the conversion of the Picts. also on this day Emperor Nero was born in AD68, engineer George Stephenson in 1781, Johnny Depp in 1963 and Matt Bellamy of MUSE in 1978! And Charles Dickens died in 1870. also in 1549, the first book of common prayer, compiled by Thomas Cranmer was adopted by the English church. Do you find this valuable?

On Time Team the other week they were in Iona and they thought they had found a saint's burial. St Columba is reputed to have been buried in Iona then disinterred and reburied in Kilpatrick, County Down along with St Patrick and St Brigit, it was very interesting.

Thanks for adding this megmaniac

On this day 10 June 323 Alexander the Great died

On either 10 or 11 June 323 BC, Alexander died in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar II, in Babylon at the age of 32. Details of the death differ slightly - Plutarch's account is that roughly 14 days before his death, Alexander entertained his admiral Nearchus, and spent the night and next day drinking with Medius of Larissa. He developed a fever, which grew steadily worse, until he was unable to speak, and the common soldiers, anxious about his health, demanded and were granted the right to file past him as he silently waved at them. Two days later, Alexander was dead. Diodorus recounts that Alexander was struck down with pain after downing a large bowl of unmixed wine in honour of Hercules, and died after some agony, which is also mentioned as an alternative by Arrian, but Plutarch specifically denies this claim

I think that is probably one of the worst films I have ever watched - or attempted to watch, I've never managed to stand more than half of it...
