Page Symbol for Artist pagesFilippino Lippi was born c.1457 under less than ideal circumstances. He was the result of an illegitimate union between his father, the famous artist Fra Filippo Lippi, and a nun, Lucrezia Buti, who also bore him a daughter. Filippino ('little Filippo') grew up with his father and studied art with him. Fra Filippo Lippi died when Filippino was just 12 years of age.

After his father's death, Filippino worked under another great Florentine painting master, Sandro Botticelli, to complete his apprenticeship. He remained with Botticelli until 1473, and Filippino's style was highly influenced by him. He never fully developed his own style until about 1480. He continued to work with Botticelli, Pietro Perugino and Domenico Ghirlandaio on frescoes for Lorenzo de' Medici. The Medici family also sponsored work by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.

Lippi worked in Tuscany, Lombardy, Rome and Florence. He was much acclaimed and admired in the city of Florence. While he lived in Rome he had the opportunity to study antiquities; this influence was to show itself in his paintings. Lippi would often paint antique statuettes into his words to accent them.

Lippi passed away on April 20, 1504 in the city of Florence.

Painted in 1480, and resides in the Badia Fiorentina in Florence. A scroll on the rocks contains the verse Sustine et Abstine, 'Carry on and Abstain', which is in reference to St. Bernard's teachings.

This was painted in 1485 and now resides in Galleria Sabauda of Turin. At one time this work was thought to be one by Botticelli, or done in his studio.

- When Filippino Lippi died in Florence, he was so much loved by the citizens there, that they were said to have closed all their shops on the day that he was buried.

- In his work Adoration of the Magi, Lippi includes three members of the Medici family in the painting -- Pierfrancesco de' Medici and his two sons, Giovanni and Lorenzo.

Pierfrancesco is kneeling and Giovanni is holding a goblet and Lorenzo is having his crown removed.

- In Apparition of the Virgin to St. Bernard, the praying man in the lower right-hand corner is said to be Piero del Pugliese, the man who commissioned the painting for his father's chapel.
