What role did women play during the Renaissance?
| Medieval women were restricted (it is thought) so that their undisciplined and tempting bodies did not threaten the social order and position of men. Some women were exempt from the common restrictions to their freedom and equality if they had the means and opportunities to do so. Most women remained unknown, sheltered, and quite content with living a quiet, productive, and pious life. The ladies below represent the former; they were very much in tune with the extraordinary changes happening at the end of the Medieval and Early Modern Eras. |
| Throughout the history of Western European art, women were featured in countless portraits, altarpieces, and frescoes. During the 15th century women became an important part of the Renaissance movement - as patrons of the artists. Later, during the 1540s and beyond, women were accepted as professional artists in their own right. |
| The question remains what contributions did Renaissance women give to Renaissance Europe? Did Renaissance women make contributions in areas of medicine, music, literature, architecture, poetry, or religion? |

Anna of Bohemia and Hungary, also sometimes known as Anna Jagellonica (Buda (now Budapest), Hungary, 23 July 1503 – Prague, Bohemia, 27 January 1547) was, by marriage to Ferdinand I, King of the Romans and later Holy Roman Emperor,Queen of the Romans.She was the elder child and only daughter of king Vladislaus II of Bohemia and Hungary (1456–1516) and his third wife Anne of Foix-Candale. She was an older sister of Louis II of Hungary and Bohemia, and his eventual heiress.She was born in Buda (now Budapest).Anna married Ferdinand on 25 May 1521 in Linz, Austria. At the time Ferdinand was governing the Habsburg hereditary lands on behalf of his older brother Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. It was stipulated that Ferdinand should succeed Anne's brother in case he died without male heirs.

Isabella of Austria (also known as Isabella or Elisabeth of Burgundy, of Habsburg,of Denmark or of Castile) (18 July 1501 – 19 January 1526), Archduchess of Austria and Infanta of Castile and Aragon, was Queen of Denmark, Sweden and Norway as the wife of King Christian II. She was the daughter of King Philip I and Queen Joanna of Castile and the sister of Emperor Charles V. She was born at Brussels. She served as regent of Denmark in 1520.On 11 July 1514 Isabella was married by proxy to King Christian II of Denmark with Emperor Maximilian, her grandfather, standing in for the king.
