Medieval women were restricted (it is thought) so that their undisciplined and tempting bodies did not threaten the social order and position of men. Some women were exempt from the common restrictions to their freedom and equality if they had the means and opportunities to do so. Most women remained unknown, sheltered, and quite content with living a quiet, productive, and pious life. The ladies below represent the former; they were very much in tune with the extraordinary changes happening at the end of the Medieval and Early Modern Eras.
Throughout the history of Western European art, women were featured in countless portraits, altarpieces, and frescoes. During the 15th century women became an important part of the Renaissance movement - as patrons of the artists. Later, during the 1540s and beyond, women were accepted as professional artists in their own right.
The question remains what contributions did Renaissance women give to Renaissance Europe? Did Renaissance women make contributions in areas of medicine, music, literature, architecture, poetry, or religion?
